Types of Roof Waterproofing Systems
Several waterproofing systems are available, each suited to different types of roofs and specific needs:
Here are the common roof waterproofing systems used:
1
Torch-On Waterproofing:
Ideal for flat concrete roof slabs or slightly pitched roofs, this method involves applying a bitumen-based membrane with a torch to create a waterproof layer. Torch-On has been around for ages but with new technologies emerging the industry has started to move away from this waterproofing method.
2
Liquid Waterproofing:
This system uses a liquid membrane, applied with rollers or brushes, which cures to form a rubber-like elastomeric waterproof membrane. It's versatile and can be used on various roof types. Liquid membrane waterproofing has its place in the market but does have its shortfalls due to the one-layered application method and most products containing latex that is not UV resistant.
3
Acrylic Waterproofing:
Acrylic waterproofing involves applying a durable, water-based coating designed for high UV resistance, making it suitable for roofs exposed to intense sunlight. Using acrylic waterproofing alone may not offer long-lasting protection. It's more effective to incorporate it into a layered waterproofing system for enduring results.
4
Polyurethane Waterproofing:
Known for its excellent flexibility and strength, this system is particularly effective on roofs that experience significant movement or expansion. Polyurethane clear top coats can also be used as a top coat on Acrylic Waterproofing systems to strengthen sections that have to endure high foot traffic.
